| The
Cold Regions Research
and Engineering Laboratory is actively involved in polar research
and engineering in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. Projects literally
go to the ends of the Earth with extensive field work in both the Arctic and
Antarctic.
The work ranges from basic research on snow, sea ice, and permafrost to engineering solutions for polar construction, transportation, and logistics. We conduct laboratory studies, field experiments, and theoretical modeling. In all these endeavors we take an integrated, interdisciplinary approach combining the understanding obtained from basic research with state-of-the-art engineering solutions. CRREL is part of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. |

| Pathways to the Pole CRREL has been working to development an oversnow route from McMurdo Station to the South Pole. In January 2009 a supply convey with carrying fuel reached the pole. The same approach is now being used in Greenland.

Sea ice mass balance buoys CRREL contributes to the Arctic Observing Network. In the past decade we have deployed over 40 autonomous buoys to measure the mass balance of sea ice. Results show increased melting on the bottom of the ice
