    CRREL history The poles Facilities

The Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory was founded on 1 February 1961. It is located in Hanover, New Hampshire. It will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. The core purpose of CRREL is

"Solving complex national challenges through interdisciplinary research and development."

Our mission is to solve interdisciplinary, strategically important problems of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Army, DOD, and the Nation by advancing and applying science and engineering to complex environments, materials, and processes in all seasons and climates, with unique core competencies related to the Earth's cold regions.

There are approximately 50 scientists and engineers working on polar problems at CRREL. They are civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as geophysicists, atmospheric scientists, physical scientists, chemists, and physicists. Topic areas include permafrost, snow, glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, construction, transportation, environmental science, and climate.
